Nestled on the side of the Preseli Hills in the heart of rural Pembrokeshire, this welcoming bunkhouse and cottage are the perfect base for outdoor adventures and group stays. Surrounded by open moorland, ancient stone monuments, and quiet country lanes, we have direct access to some of West Wales’ most inspiring walking, cycling, and wildlife-rich landscapes. We are ten miles from Fishguard and five miles from Newport on the Eastern side of the Gwaun Valley.

Gernos Fawr is a 300 year old hill farm sitting on a little used bridleway 3/4 mile from the road and with direct access onto the Preseli hills. The current farmhouse was probably built as a shire house (gate house) to mark the boundary of the land owned by the Barony of Caemaes. There is evidence of what was likely the original house and possibly a mill although early records for this area are scarce.

The traditional long barn which now houses both the Refuge and the Cottage is the oldest building here. The lower section had been converted to a milking parlour in the 1950’s but when milk churns were replaced with Tankers it ceased to be a viable dairy farm because of access. Consequently the farm was uninhabited from the early 1980’s until we moved in, in 2001. We completed the Cottage renovation in 2005 and finished the Refuge as a bunkhouse in 2024.

We have 21 acres of un-spoilt heath and moorland where we keep a few sheep, chickens, ducks and a goose called Mother. With a bridleway running through the farm we are perfectly situated for walking and cycling (gravel, mtb and road).

There’s a wealth of flora and fauna and if stargazing is your thing there is very little light pollution. There’s lots to do without even going out. But if you do, Newport is only five miles away and Fishguard is ten. Also within easy reach you’ll find Castell Henllys iron age fort, the Shire Horse centre, Cilgerran wildlife centre and Llys-y-fran country park to name a few. And if you fancy a pint after a day out exploring, Bluestone Brewery and Taproom is just one and a half miles down the road.

Stunning views, moody clouds, big skies and sunsets add magic to your adventure here at Gernos Fawr in Pembrokeshire.
